The NAED Western starts “today” (Wednesday). Attendance is relatively consistent with the Eastern, albeit aided considerably (abotu 10%) by the solar industry with 548 attendees, excluding NAED personnel, representing 230 companies.

A couple of observations; attendance was low, maybe lower than the Eastern but considering the western region is significantly smaller it’s not a big surprise. Of those clients that I spoke to, a good number of distributors are seeing some rebound from the recession and on average closed up last year right around a 30% down which was consistent with the eastern. I thought that the ratios of females in attendance was relatively high over recent conferences but it ended up that there was a national Mary Kay conference in the same hotel. There is always a glimmer of positive news; 3 distributors were up over the year prior, I picked up some new business and got to spend 14 minutes in the California sunshine!
A realistic optimism seemed to be the mood in general. Distribution seemed resigned to a down commercial market, flat industrial market and growth in Alt energy, property mgt and government spending. Overall a slight improvement over last year.
