The British are Coming…Again

This makes absolutely no sense…but it is British.
They can’t even speak proper English that can be understood….and shame on these big retailers for getting hood winked.
Just because Wal-Mart doesn’t stock it doesn’t mean I don’t want to buy it…….

Total disrespect for a system that has worked for a 100 years….that’s all we need is the Brits meddling in our business along with a bunch retailers who don’t seem to understand the liability issues.
Let’s see HD and Lowe’s bring in all this unnamed and unlabeled product. My assumption is that Wal-Mart will bring in “Equate” product that people will install in the wall or ceiling. They’ll be a problem and all will suffer.
BRC and RILA will be able to keep a bunch of people on the road inspecting product like it was Brit meat.
Brand Name product will have to raise prices all in the name of Rila and they don’t know crap about electricity. My suggestion is they should listen to a bunch of very successful manufacturers that don’t seem to have product recalls.
But then again they are British and they have been sticking their noses in other peoples business for many years.

It reads like the Brits are trying to solve their unemployment problem on the back of a very successful American electrical manufacturing and distribution market place.

Hmmmm…… I wonder if this is the start of distributor buying groups being pushed to the side and retailers groups taking over as they sell more product.

There is one thing about the Brits….they are consistently British. They really don’t know what they are talking about, but they sure want to impress everyone.

It is distressing that large US retailers want to dilute testing standards so that they can probably sell no brand name or their own private labeled brand for a higher profit and a product recall is probably a pimple on a Brits behind because they can blame it on a plant and point a finger at a public report.
The drive for globalization will ruin proven testing that American manufacturers with Brand Named products have lived with for years.

Yep, the Brits won’t leave us alone.They still seek their empire here in America.We are the one that got away.
I am wondering why NAW and NAED haven’t been more involved in shining a light on this issue? Maybe it’s because Brand Name manufacturers are not making it an issue.Or is it that my association doesn’t understand the problem?
Price and market share are still the name of the game in my market place.

Fellows it sounds like there is more to this that what meets the mind.
I’ve talked to a couple of my manufacturer friends and they are concerned that not enough light is being shined on the subject.
It seems that aside from the unwarranted cost of inspection, American manufacturers are being sucked into European style of inspections that diminish their name brand value. This the very reason this manufacturer has resisted the new numbering schema that IDEA is out promoting.
I for one hope you can keep some sort of light on this subject.

Sorry I didn’t finish my comment just above…..All we need is one more association that doesn’t know what the heck they are doing….they just want to solve their un-employment problem in England and add cost to products that have been very well engineered and for the most part have few if any recalls.
What bother me more is that in the end they will circumvent our states rights and at some point they will try and run over our years of successful electrical codes.

World economy and globalization always invite those countries that have failed at world domination such as the Brits.Their country is not even referred to as ‘Great Britain’ any more.
The real problem is that other countries feel that they can change a success story such as America simply by changing our business models with unwarranted inspections. Now the Chinese are demanding that all source knowledge for electric cars be transferred to them……NEMA should stand up to these people and nail the door shut.

Jim, If you hadn’t called, I probably would not have remembered why we decided not to assign UNSPSC codes to our products.
This whole RILA/RBC smacks of turning Brand Name products into commodities.
Without getting into a great deal of detail, a few years ago IDEA suggested that UNSPSC numbering system was the way that American Electrical Manufacturers should number their system to allow their products to be accepted for bid purposes for Multi-National corporations.
We kicked it around and almost took the bait, but finally decided to keep our coding system along with UPC’s.
Our conclusion was that our Name Brand products would be thrown in the same pile of products as a tier 2 manufacturer or no tier manufacturer.
The RILA/BRC effort attempts to do a end run on accepted testing procedure’s that have become a way of American Electrical Manufacturing. From what I can tell from the original post above and from talking to a few other knowledgeable people RILA/BRC won’t even talk to NEMA….In fact they want to establish their own set of standards at a factory level while forcing American manufacturers to pay for inspections, with the threat of public exposure if they don’t comply.
So my question to fellow American electrical manufacturers, who appointed RILA/BRC the inspection police?

Will this have any impact on electrician training in the US? Will this mean that training will have to change form the ground up if inspection tactics are going to change on the factory floor?
