Is “e” (needs for eCommerce, data, mobility, CRM, etc) increasing for you and complicating your business?

0 The past few weeks have been a little unusual for me as it seems to be “e-time.” A number of conversations, and some engagements, have revolved around e-initiatives. They include:
- website redesign with e-commerce initiative that has resulted in a supplier search (and a departure for the client in working with their ERP company)
- discussions regarding catalog content … some relating to aggregation of content, some relating to content from specific manufacturers
- discussions regarding how to determine which content aggregator (IDEA or Trade Service) is “better” and the challenge becomes “what is the definition of better” when a sample (usually 100-200 SKUs) of “common data” (same manufacturer, same SKUs) results in difference … which is “better”?
- working with manufacturers regarding e-communications initiatives
- discussion with some service providers regarding supply chain initiatives
- a pending relationship with an e-platform that can customize manufacturer marketing content for deployment to distributors
- NEMRA introduced its NEMRA Network CRM platform
- and today culminated the activity (and prompted this posting) with a discussion with a venture capital firm that inquired about eCommerce in the B2B wholesale market and asked about a number of eCommerce companies (about 20, of which many I hadn’t heard of – and if you want the list, email me) and if distributors increasing their eCommerce adoption, preferred to use outside suppliers vs ERP companies, industry thoughts on server-based systems or SaaS (cloud) systems.
This then led me to some questions for you …
- Is your company thinking more about “e” and integrating it into all aspects of your business?
- How is this changing the structure of your company? Does everything go through IT? Is IT becoming more embedded into other aspects of your business (and becoming more ‘business-oriented’) or are you more open to SaaS systems / outsourcing and only using IT for when you need to integrate into your ERP system?
- Who drives e-research initiatives within your company and where is the idea generation coming from?
With e-initiatives becoming an “expectation” and companies needing to increase their speed of deployment and adoption, how are you thinking about e? How is this changing the culture within your company? How are you communicating differently? How does it affect training?
And what does this mean for budgeting? Are these IT budgets? Should every department have an “IT / e” budget or is this just an expectation of initiatives?
Many questions that beg discussion. And could this become a differentiator between progressive and reactive companies? Could it impact net profitability?
And then the big question … where should your catalog content come from? In a recent conversation with a leading e-commerce / website provider, their electrical clients were essentially evenly split between IDEA and Trade Service for their catalog content (and we have another client who will subscribe to both and use software (and human intervention) to select which one to use for each SKU) and another who will probably use IDEA … in other words, it’s muddled.
How are you navigating the overall e-decision-making process? The catalog content process?
