For years we’ve heard about the need for grid modernization and once of the concerns regarding the growth of data centers is power generation. Industrial factories also play into this. Power generation construction, and subsequent maintenance, is, and will, represent a growth segment for manufacturers and selected distributors nationally as well as potentially others locally.

This includes renewable energy generation, grid modernization, battery energy storage, hydrogen production, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and new transmission networks that connect energy resources to growing demand centers. As governments, utilities, and private companies invest trillions of dollars into these initiatives, the opportunities extend far beyond power generation. The entire electrical supply chain, including electrical distributors, manufacturers, contractors, and integrators, stands to benefit.

Major Energy Transition Projects Under Construction
SunZia Wind adn Transmission Project
One of the most significant energy transition projects in North America is the SunZia Wind and Transmission Project in New Mexico and Arizona. Developed by Pattern Energy, the project combines approximately 3.6 GW of wind generation with more than 550 miles of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission infrastructure. The system is designed to deliver renewable power from New Mexico to major population centers across the Southwest. The project represents more than $16 billion in direct investment and is expected to generate over $20 billion in economic benefits throughout its lifecycle.
HyVelocity Hydrogen Hub
The HyVelocity Hydrogen Hub along the Texas Gulf Coast is another transformational initiative. Supported by federal and private-sector investment, the project seeks to establish large-scale hydrogen production, transportation, and end-use infrastructure. Positioned within one of the world’s largest energy and petrochemical regions, the hub is expected to accelerate low-carbon industrial development while creating significant demand for electrical equipment, automation systems, instrumentation, and power distribution infrastructure.
Utility-Scale Battery Storage Expansion
Across Texas, California, Arizona, and other states, utilities and developers are rapidly deploying battery energy storage facilities. These projects help stabilize grids with high renewable penetration and improve reliability during peak demand periods. Each installation requires switchgear, transformers, protection relays, controls, power conversion equipment, and extensive balance-of-plant electrical systems.
Major Planned Projects
Grain Belt Express Transmission Project
The Grain Belt Express is a planned $11 billion HVDC transmission project spanning approximately 800 miles across Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. When completed, it is expected to provide up to 5,000 MW of transmission capacity and enhance grid reliability across the Midwest. The project is scheduled to begin major construction activities and is anticipated to support thousands of jobs while enabling the connection of new renewable generation resources.
Expanded EV Charging Infrastructure Corridors
Federal and state programs continue to support thousands of planned EV charging installations along major transportation corridors. While individual sites may appear modest, collectively they represent substantial demand for electrical distribution equipment, panelboards, switchboards, transformers, conductors, conduit systems, and monitoring technologies.
Data Center and AI Infrastructure Projects
The explosive growth of artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented electricity demand. Utilities and developers are planning extensive transmission, substation, and generation investments to support hyperscale data centers. These projects often require large quantities of medium-voltage equipment, busway systems, transformers, breakers, and power monitoring technologies, creating long-term opportunities throughout the electrical supply chain.
Why Energy Transition Projects Matter to Electrical Distributors
For the electrical distribution community, energy transition projects represent one of the most significant growth opportunities in decades.
Every utility-scale solar facility, battery storage system, substation, hydrogen plant, manufacturing facility, or data center requires thousands of electrical components. Demand extends across virtually every product family:

- Circuit breakers
- Wire and cable
- Conduit and fittings
- Relays and controls
- Power quality equipment
- Automation products
- Medium-voltage distribution equipment
- Industrial networking solutions

Electrical distributors are uniquely positioned to support these projects through inventory management, logistics expertise, technical support, project staging, and supply chain visibility.
As lead times remain a critical project concern, distributors increasingly serve as strategic partners rather than simply product providers. The ability to secure critical equipment, coordinate deliveries, and support contractors through project execution has become a major competitive advantage.

Observations
Thanks Chris. Some thoughts:
- The national players in the utility space are, in no order, Wesco, Irby (a division of Sonepar), Border States, and Graybar. Then there are regional / local players. For the regional / local players, I know electrical distributors who see this opportunity and are seeking acquisitions.
- The type of project can determine the type of distributor that would typically be involved. For utility / transmission work, the suppliers typically authorize the distributors. In the solar space, non-utility distributors could participate. In some segments, or major product categories, it is standard for manufacturers to sell direct. In other words, “wanting” to serve this segment and “being able to” are different things. Research is needed.
- This does not mean that there is no business available as standard electrical material is always needed. The key is knowing who will be involved in the installation element and pursuing what you can comfortably support financially (there could be very big orders.)
- Additionally, to be involved, there could be technical support needed, depending upon the line, as well as value-added services.
The energy transition market, and serving the power generation needs, will represent significant growth for the electrical products, and distribution market. Enterprising distributors who create a model, or can serve local needs, may be able to reap these opportunities.
