The Pulse of Lighting Research Report
The Pulse of Lighting Research report includes:
- Shares Q1 sales and unit performance from insights from electrical / lighting distributors, manufacturers and their sales organizations. By gaining input from all three audiences it is possible to triangulate performance … and all three are pretty close … all in positive territory.
- Identifies the fastest growing segments of the market.
- Fewer distributors reported increasing their inventory as well as having a growing backlog. Although there is a change, performance still remains strong and could be seasonal in nature.
- Q1 aggregate market share of industry lighting conglomerates (Acuity Brands, Eaton Lighting, Hubbell Lighting, Current, Cree, Philips Lighting and Rab). While still a majority of industry sales, the percent declined slightly from 2018 Q4
- This quarter distributors were asked to share their lighting control quotation activity, which is up significantly from a year ago.
- 50% of manufacturer respondents reported flat or negative performance with another 20% indicating strong double-digit performance … a dichotomy in performance.
- Manufacturers and their sales organizations were asked about the focus of projects that they are quoting from a renovation vs new construction viewpoint. Collectively they report that 60% of their quotation activity is focused on the renovation market, which is an indication that non-conglomerates are winning the renovation market.
- The value of brands is seen as declining with a significant percentage of projects either being “soft speced” or “value-engineered” by distributors and independent sales organizations.
All three audiences were asked what is driving their lighting business and what dynamics are affecting their business. Almost 10 pages of verbatim quotes are shared to give readers insights on opportunities and challenges faced by the industry with many relating to price, competitive pressures, imported products, product quality and the role of distributors.
