Will Your 2027 Sales Need a Nudge? Could be an IDEA
There are two sides of the electrical distribution market right now. Those who benefit from data centers, industrial construction and the limited large projects plus are riding the tailwinds of commodities and those fighting to win daily business.
And while DISC, in its latest Flash Report is projecting 2027 to be a very strong year, it’s unknown how much of that growth is driven by large projects, most notably datacenters.
The data center market drives three sides of the business – data center construction, industrial OEMs who serve data centers, and power generation. This means contractor, industrial and utility work.
The challenge is large distributors win a higher percentage of data center business. Their size creates advantages. Others can win pieces. Plus, they are typically national. You can’t win if there isn’t one in your area.
Disc also states that the resi and construction markets will grow. With these interest rates?
Which gets to a market concern that can adjust DISC’s data-driven projections…the uncertainty of the war and, assuming it ends by the end of the year, the time for the economy, fuel costs, and interest rates to reset.
Which brings us to thinking about 2027?
You may be the beneficiary of large projects but …
Plan for a market share taking year where you need to out-think and out-execute the competition.
This is typically where independent distributors have an advantage… the ability to be nimble, especially in serving small and mid-sized customers.
Arming Your Salesforce to Out Think Your Competition
At the recent eBiz conference, IDEA introduced attendees to Nudge, a unique enhancement to its Data Whisper service (and if you were not familiar with Data Whispers, it is a salesperson specific intelligence system. Nudge takes the service to another level and can help distributor salespeople generate ideas, share insights, and be more effective for their company and customers.
Mark McGready, IDEA’s Director of Data Analytics & Solutions shared how Nudge can provide companies a nudge to accelerate sales in 2027″
The modern commercial version of AI will be 4 years old this November, and for as much talk as there’s been about AI, it still feels like a technology still finding its place. At first, it threatened every white-collar job, then it looked like it would replace every piece of software, and now we’re looking at automating the repeatable and basic parts of our business. The impact it can bring still remains evasive. That said, if we look at recent AI company valuations, most people clearly think this technology is going to change everything. Except no-one knows how. We’re back in the early days of the internet, and most of us remember the roller coaster ride that was!
One stark reality is that AI tools like ChatGPT are estimated to have over a billion weekly users. Not with marketing or incentives or a large corporate push, just from quiet user adoption and word of mouth. It’s clear that most people are using AI to improve themselves, and often individuals are bringing the benefits to their employers, yet most companies report that their AI investments are small, and results are mixed at best. This is a moment when the workers see the benefit, but the company is still struggling to integrate the benefits into their core processes. Again, just like the early internet.
Sometimes when you’re waiting for the right application of a new technology, you lose patience waiting on the usual start-ups and tech firms to understand the need and how the technology is the right fit to resolve it. Too often the technology is created, and then the need is discovered. Obviously, a better goal is to define the need and then find technology that fits the situation. The team at IDEA took a look at the landscape and decided to build something themselves. Last week we launched Nudge from Data Whispers, a first of its kind sales assistant that uses AI and language modelling in situations where the capability makes perfect sense.
Your Sales Rep Should Be a Walking Encyclopedia
In the past, sales reps needed to be walking encyclopedias – product information, market intelligence, sales reporting, order status, inventory availability, service solutions, engineering applications and so on. Quite frankly, this is the way they become valuable to their, and your, customer. It took a long time, years ago, to become a great salesperson because understanding the technical aspects of a business had a steep learning curve.
When everyone got a laptop, we suddenly had different software tools to access all this information, but we still had to navigate through the data to find what we needed, and we still had to master all these systems. Systems that often cost large sums and never quite worked as expected. Ultimately when the range of questions anyone customer-facing can be asked in any given day is vast, more often than not the answer is ‘I’ll get back to you.’ Time is lost looking for answers or direction. Half of the average salesperson’s time is spent away from customers. Your sales force is effectively running at 50% capacity.
AI is exactly designed for information recall
Luckily, AI is exactly designed for information recall. The only challenge is providing the correct response, in a secure and private manner. That’s why we’ve built a chatbot with that in mind – something trained on product data, manufacturer and market intelligence, sales history and financial analysis, product status and cross references, item specifications and product applications. We knew the standard chatbots couldn’t deliver this, but using speech recognition technology and mapping out the ins and outs of how to respond would offer something compelling. No more; “I’ll get back to you.” Instead, you’d just ask Nudge.
Nudge Helps Answer 10 Fundamental Sales Questions
We set a goal for our chatbot to be able to answer 10 fundamental questions:
- What has this customer purchased previously and what else should they be buying?
- Where in my business (customer) do I need to pay attention to right now?
- How can I know if I’ve got my pricing at the right level for this account?
- How can I build a moat around my largest accounts?
- How can I find out about this prospect company and what might they buy?
- How can I help a customer discover which product meets their engineering challenge?
- What are the 3 best leading sales questions if I want to sell this product to a certain type of customer?
- Where are my best opportunities to grow revenues or grow bottom line profits?
- What is the availability of the product this customer is asking for, and if we don’t have it, do we have an equivalent?
- What should I be focused on today?
This list of ten represents the heart of what customer selling is all about.
We’re pleased to say we’ve built the system that can answer each of these, right away, through a chatbot interface we’ve nicknamed Nudge. And you don’t have to take our word for it. When we conduct a demo for you, you can ask the questions to see how Nudge responds.
The goal is to multiply productivity and performance for sales, and in turn to strengthen relationships and alignment with customers by removing some of the frustrations that getting the right answer can bring.
From brand new employees to 30-year veterans, Nudge works for everyone and the advantages it can bring appear every hour of every day. And because he’s built by IDEA, he’s designed with electrical industry experience and the industry in mind. (And if you’re attending the AD NAM next week, Nudge will be there.)
I encourage you to take a few minutes and watch some of the videos we’ve made about just what Nudge can do. It’s one of those moments you need to see to understand, but once you see you’ll understand that things will never be the same again, and something fundamentally useful has arrived.”
Engaging with Nudge
- In an age where experience is retiring; people new to the industry or new to sales need to be “up and running” quickly; where customers have answers before questions; when information is a currency and a commodity; and when companies have more data than they know what to do with, AI can be a tool to assimilate information to be available upon demand … verbally, via test, or yes, by going to a website. The key is making the information actionable and easily obtainable.
- Last year IDEA launched Data Whispers and shared it with many distributors. Those who adopted commented on its ease of use and effectiveness.
- Now there is Nudge, which is a totally different, more immersive, and more effective, informational experience.
- For independents attending next week’s AD NAM, take the opportunity to talk to Mark and his team about Data Whispers. More importantly, ask to speak with Nudge.
- And if you will not be at AD, or are booked, contact Mark or schedule a demo
Nudge may be able to help your sales team too out-analyze and outthink your competition.
And help you take share in 2027.
